Change the language of a calendar Print E-mail
User Rating: / 0
Wednesday, 10 December 2008

The program's user interface is currently only localized in English. But you can change the language of the calendar to match other geographic regions. The months and the days will be printed in the language of the region you choose. You must first setup your computer to display dates in the region you want. Then you must click on the "Set to System Region" button in the calendar settings panel to have these region settings stored in your calendar. Follow these steps to change the calendar to another language:Create a calendar.

  • Create a calendar.
  • Choose Edit > Calendar Settings…
  • Click on the "Open International" button. This will open the International System Preferences on your computer.
  • In the International System Preferences, click on the Formats tab. Select the region you want from the Region drop down menu. This will change the format used to display the date, time and numbers to the region you want. If the region you want is not visible in the Region drop down menu, turn on the "Show all regions" checkbox.
  • Switch back to HappyNewYear!. In the calendar settings panel you should now see the System Region listed to what you just set in the International System Preferences, and the "Set to System Region" button will be enabled. Click this button to switch your calendar to the new region.

NOTE: The setting for the date format region is saved in your calendar. So once you set the Calendar Region in the calendar settings panel, you can change your International System Preferences and it will not affect your calendar. Your calendar will only be changed to the region that your system is set to if you click on the "Set to System Region" button in the calendar settings panel.

HappyNewYear! Tutorial Print E-mail

Monday, 01 January 2007

Here's a tutorial on how to create a HappyNewYear! calendar, how to customize it, and how to display it.

1. Launch HappyNewYear! and the Template Picker will appear. This is where you choose what calendar format you wish to start with. It is important to choose the format based on how you want to display your calendar. Click once on the template you want to start with to select it, then hit the Choose button.  Click here for more information on how to choose a calendar format.

1

2. A new document with the format you choose will be created. The document will be in "year view" mode where you can see all the months of your calendar.

2

3. Drag and drop photos from the Finder or from iPhoto into the Image Area for each month.

3

4. Once you have added photos for your months, switch the document window into "month view" mode to view a single month in more detail. To switch to "month view", select a month and then choose View > Month (you can also double click on a month).

4

5. In month view you can view a single month in greater detail. Notice the controls on the left side of the window. Click on any of the help buttons (?) to view help about how these controls work.

  • Use the navigation controls to change which month you are viewing.
  • Use the Calendar Layout controls to change the margin and background of the calendar.
  • Use the Month Layout controls to change the number of images for the current month.

Below we have changed the background color of the whole calendar by clicking on the Background color well, and then selecting a blue color from the color palette.

5

6. Click on the Calendar Settings button in the tool bar or choose Edit > Calendar Settings... to see more calendar settings you can change. Click on the help button in this panel for more information about any of these controls. Some of these controls may be disabled if you are not a registered user, including changing the starting date for your calendar.

6

7. To alter an image for a month, click on the Image Area in the right preview area to select it. The Image Properties controls will become visible on the left side of the window. Use the Image Properties controls to rotate and scale the photo. It's easy to flip images 90-degrees, or use the rotation knob for free-form rotation. You can also type in your desired rotation and scaling factors. In this case we zoomed the image in to fill up the whole image area.

7

8. To move a photo around within the image area, first click on the image area to select it. Then move the mouse over the image area photo to enable the hand-grabber. Use the hand-grabber to move the photo around inside of the Image Area of the Card Preview. Here we moved the image slightly to the left.

8

9. To alter the appearance of the month and year, click on the month and year in the right preview area to select it. The Month/Year Properties controls will become visible on the left side of the window. Note: these changes apply to all the months of your calendar. In this case we changed the font, size and color of the month and year.

9

10. To alter the appearance of the days grid, click on the days of the month in the right preview area to select it. The Days Properties controls will become visible on the left side of the window. Note: these changes apply to all the months of your calendar. In this case we changed the color and font of the days.

10

11. Save your calendar often using the menu File > Save.

11

12. Print your calendar on your own color printer by clicking on the Print button. Choose HappyNewYear! > Preferences... to view and change the printing options (not shown here) before printing. Always view a print preview before actually printing your calendar by clicking on the Preview button in the Print dialog. If the Preview looks okay, then print the card. Previewing before printing can save you money by making sure the calendar looks the way you want before using up your costly photo paper and printer ink.

12

13. If you have created a 4"x6" calendar, another option for printing your calendar is to export the calendar as 300dpi JPEG image files suitable for printing at any digital photo center. This option is only useful for 4"x6" calendars because most photo centers do not support printing the other calendar sizes. The JPEG image files that HappyNewYear! creates are almost identical to the JPEG image files which your digital camera creates when you take digital photos. Printing your calendar at a digital photo center is just as easy as printing any photo from your digital camera. Click on 'Export to JPEG' and choose the name of your export. A folder will be created using the name you enter, and each month of your calendar will be saved as a separate JPEG image file within that folder. Upload the image files to your photo center's web site, or save them on a storage media that your photo center supports to carry it into the photo center (CDR, Compact Flash Card, SD Card, USB Flash drive, etc...)

13

14. You are now ready to display your HappyNewYear! calendar. How you display your calendar will depend on the calendar format you chose for your calendar.  Click here for more information on different HappyNewYear! calendar formats.

HappyNewYear! calendar formats

HappyNewYear! currently has three different calendar formats which you can choose from for displaying your calendar in either a calendar case, a standard 4x6 frame, or a standard CD jewel case (left to right in above photo). Below is some information about the differences between these calendar formats and what you can do with each of them.

Standard CD Jewel Case

  • This format is designed to be displayed in a standard CD jewel case. If you have a lot of standard CD jewel cases sitting around, this format is ideal because you can recycle them by using them to display your HappyNewYear! calendars.
  • When storing extra months of your calendar behind the current month, there may not be room for putting a full 12 months in this case. The number of months you can store varies depending on the thickness of the photo paper you use to print your calendars on.
  • The dimensions for this format are 4 3/4 inches by 4 3/4 inches (4.75"x4.75").
  • Click here to find out how to use a standard CD jewel case as a frame for your HappyNewYear! calendar.

Calendar Case

  • This format is designed to be used with calendar cases which are specifically designed to display calendars.
  • These calendar cases are designed to easily flip open to display the calendar, so you don't have to remove and flip over the cover like when using a standard CD jewel case.
  • Because of the way these Calendar Cases are designed, they usually have more than enough room to store a full 12 months.
  • Because the calendar is displayed on the bottom half of this calendar case, the actual calendar is not displayed behind plastic like when using a standard CD jewel case to display your calendars. Only a small sliver at the bottom of the calendar is covered by plastic.
  • The dimensions for this format are 5 7/16 inches by 4 11/16 inches (5.4375"x4.6875").
  • Click here to see some places to order calendar cases.

4x6" landscape and portrait

  • This format is designed to be displayed in any 4x6 picture frame.
  • When using this format you can print your calendar out on your own color printer, or you can print it out at any photo center by exporting the calendar as JPEG files and printing them just like any other 4x6 digital photo.
  • The dimensions for this format are 4 inches by 6 inches (4"x6").
  • Click here to see some 4x6 picture frames that we found for displaying calendars.

10x15cm landscape and portrait

  • This format is designed to be displayed in any 10x15cm picture frame.
  • When using this format you can print your calendar out on your own color printer, or you can print it out at any photo center by exporting the calendar as JPEG files and printing them just like any other 10x15cm digital photo.
  • The dimensions for this format are 10cm x 15cm.

Other Sizes

  • We currently do not support formats other than those listed above but some users have reported good results by using our Export to JPEG feature in conjunction with Apple's Preview program to print to other sizes.

Metric Units Print E-mail
User Rating: / 1
Monday, 18 December 2006

We do not currently have metric unit support in our software.  Please refer to the following information for conversion to metric units.

CD Jewel Case size is 4.75" x 4.75" which corresponds to 12.065cm x 12.065cm.

Calendar Case size is  4.75" x 5.5" which corresponds to 12.065cm x 13.97cm.

Paper size of 4"x6" corresponds to 10.16cm x 15.24cm.

Our margins correspond to approximately the following:

1/8" = .3175cm
1/4" = .635cm
3/8" = .9525cm

We may consider adding better metric support in a future release.

We currently do not support printing to any paper sizes other than 4"x6" or paper that is larger than the desired output size.

An interesting article about metric paper sizes can be found here:

HappyNewYear! is designed to print the following sizes ONLY: 4"x6", CD Jewel Case, and Calendar Case.

If you would like to print to a different size paper, you may be able to try the following work-around.   The basic principle is to export the image to JPEG format and then use Apple's Preview program to print to paper sizes of your choosing.  Apple's Preview software includes options to Center Image and Scale to Fit when printing.

Apple's iPhoto software may also be used to print to a different paper size.
