Here's a tutorial on how to create a HappyNewYear! calendar, how to customize it, and how to display it.

1. Launch HappyNewYear! and the Template Picker will appear. This is where you choose what calendar format you wish to start with. It is important to choose the format based on how you want to display your calendar. Click once on the template you want to start with to select it, then hit the Choose button.  Click here for more information on how to choose a calendar format.

1

2. A new document with the format you choose will be created. The document will be in "year view" mode where you can see all the months of your calendar.

2

3. Drag and drop photos from the Finder or from iPhoto into the Image Area for each month.

3

4. Once you have added photos for your months, switch the document window into "month view" mode to view a single month in more detail. To switch to "month view", select a month and then choose View > Month (you can also double click on a month).

4

5. In month view you can view a single month in greater detail. Notice the controls on the left side of the window. Click on any of the help buttons (?) to view help about how these controls work.

  • Use the navigation controls to change which month you are viewing.
  • Use the Calendar Layout controls to change the margin and background of the calendar.
  • Use the Month Layout controls to change the number of images for the current month.

Below we have changed the background color of the whole calendar by clicking on the Background color well, and then selecting a blue color from the color palette.

5

6. Click on the Calendar Settings button in the tool bar or choose Edit > Calendar Settings... to see more calendar settings you can change. Click on the help button in this panel for more information about any of these controls. Some of these controls may be disabled if you are not a registered user, including changing the starting date for your calendar.

6

7. To alter an image for a month, click on the Image Area in the right preview area to select it. The Image Properties controls will become visible on the left side of the window. Use the Image Properties controls to rotate and scale the photo. It's easy to flip images 90-degrees, or use the rotation knob for free-form rotation. You can also type in your desired rotation and scaling factors. In this case we zoomed the image in to fill up the whole image area.

7

8. To move a photo around within the image area, first click on the image area to select it. Then move the mouse over the image area photo to enable the hand-grabber. Use the hand-grabber to move the photo around inside of the Image Area of the Card Preview. Here we moved the image slightly to the left.

8

9. To alter the appearance of the month and year, click on the month and year in the right preview area to select it. The Month/Year Properties controls will become visible on the left side of the window. Note: these changes apply to all the months of your calendar. In this case we changed the font, size and color of the month and year.

9

10. To alter the appearance of the days grid, click on the days of the month in the right preview area to select it. The Days Properties controls will become visible on the left side of the window. Note: these changes apply to all the months of your calendar. In this case we changed the color and font of the days.

10

11. Save your calendar often using the menu File > Save.

11

12. Print your calendar on your own color printer by clicking on the Print button. Choose HappyNewYear! > Preferences... to view and change the printing options (not shown here) before printing. Always view a print preview before actually printing your calendar by clicking on the Preview button in the Print dialog. If the Preview looks okay, then print the card. Previewing before printing can save you money by making sure the calendar looks the way you want before using up your costly photo paper and printer ink.

12

13. If you have created a 4"x6" calendar, another option for printing your calendar is to export the calendar as 300dpi JPEG image files suitable for printing at any digital photo center. This option is only useful for 4"x6" calendars because most photo centers do not support printing the other calendar sizes. The JPEG image files that HappyNewYear! creates are almost identical to the JPEG image files which your digital camera creates when you take digital photos. Printing your calendar at a digital photo center is just as easy as printing any photo from your digital camera. Click on 'Export to JPEG' and choose the name of your export. A folder will be created using the name you enter, and each month of your calendar will be saved as a separate JPEG image file within that folder. Upload the image files to your photo center's web site, or save them on a storage media that your photo center supports to carry it into the photo center (CDR, Compact Flash Card, SD Card, USB Flash drive, etc...)

14. You are now ready to display your HappyNewYear! calendar. How you display your calendar will depend on the calendar format you chose for your calendar.  Click here for more information on different HappyNewYear! calendar formats.

  • Standard CD jewel case calendars
Click here to see how to use a standard CD jewel case as a calendar stand

    • Calendar Case calendars
Just cut out your calendar months, open the calendar case and put them in. To make your calendar case stand up, open the Calendar case up all the way until you cannot open it any more, so that the lid becomes the base of the display.
Click here to see some places to order calendar cases.

    • 4x6 calendars
Display your 4x6 calendar in any 4x6 picture frame that you like.
